Bivalves were long thought to be “symptomless carriers” of marine microalgal toxins to human seafood consumers. In the past three decades, science has come to recognize that harmful algae and their toxins can be harmful to grazers, including bivalves. Indeed, studies have shown conclusively that some microalgal toxins function as active grazing deterrents. The hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis hosts gill-associated sulfur- and methane-oxidizing bacteria which sustain host nutrition and allow it to reach high densities at various sites along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Previous studies have demonstrated that in similar dual symbioses, relative abundances of each bacterial type could change following variations in symbiont substrate availabilities. Etat des connaissances sur la pathologie chez les mollusques bivalves ArchiMer

A short description of the disease causing organisms affecting bivalves is presented in this document, including the diagnosis, the oustanding research and bivalve husbandry. Mollusc populations may be safe from disease epizootics if an early prevention of disease is coupled with a strict regulatory system on transfer (according to what happens in agriculture). The species to culture may be thoroughly selected and risky populations moved. Imported stocks are strictly controlled. The researchcs's target is to improve the diagnosis tools and try to find resistant mollusc strains. Epidemiological surveys are also necessary to control diseases.

Among the different condition indices, some of them were compared on a population of the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The follow-up of experimental racks was performed monthly during four years. The use of dry weight in condition indices gave a more precise and more reliable representation for the condition of the oysters than the fresh weight. The sensitivity of these indices, which corresponds to their ability in revealing small changes in the physiological condition, was calculated for each indice. Differences in terms of mortality among infected animals were reported suggesting a genetic basis of the susceptibility to the OsHV-1 infection. Evidence for interspecies transmission of oyster herpesvirus in marine bivalves ArchiMer

Since 1991, numerous herpesvirus infections associated with high mortality have been reported around the world in various marine bivalve species. In order to determine whether these infections are due to ostreid herpesvirus-l (OsHV1), a previously characterized pathogen of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas), PCR analysis was carried out on 30 samples of larvae collected from four bivalve species (C. gigas, Ostrea edulis, Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum), most exhibiting mortality prior to collection. All samples were shown to be infected by OsHV1. French scallops: A new host for ostreid herpesvirus-1 ArchiMer

Sporadic high mortalities were reported among larval French scallops (Pecten maximus). Electron microscopy of moribund larvae revealed particles with the characteristics of a herpesvirus in association with cellular lesions. PCR and DNA sequencing showed that the virus is a variant of ostreid herpesvirus-1 that has already been described in clams and oysters. This is the first description of a herpesvirus infection of a scallop species. The virus was transmitted successfully from an extract of infected scallop larvae to uninfected scallop or oyster (Crassostrea, gigas) larvae, demonstrating that it is able to infect both species. Genetic structure at different spatial scales in the pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera cumingii) in French Polynesian lagoons: beware of sampling strategy and genetic patchiness ArchiMer

In order to study further the genetic structure of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia with a special consideration for the sampling scale, we analyzed or re-analyzed sets of data based on nuclear DNA markers obtained at different spatial scales. At a large scale (several 1,000 km), the remote Marquesas Islands were confirmed to be significantly differentiated from Tuamotu-Gambier and Society archipelagos, with a marked difference however for the two main islands that are different from each other. ABSTRACT Larkinia grandis (Broderip & G.B. Sowerby I, 1829), an important fishing resource for Mexican communities, is an Arcidae clam. It is also considered a species with aquaculture potential. In this work we investigated the gonadal phases and sexuality in a population of L. grandis in the Gulf of California. Our findings support the hypothesis that there is one male per female in the population studied. It also documents that the shape, position and color of the gonads of L. grandis are consistent with observations in other Arcidae species. Marine bivalves are essentially gonochoric species. However, some occasional hermaphrodites specimens can be found. A histological description of two (among 179) hermaphrodites of the marine mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819) that were collected in San Jorge Bay (24S) is given. The low proportion of hermaphrodites suggests that P. purpuratus hermaphroditism could be an accidental phenomenon; nevertheless other causes are also discussed in the present study.

Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of ArA supplementation on the FA composition and hemocyte parameters of oysters Crassostrea gigas. Oyster dietary conditioning consisted of direct addition of ArA solutions at a dose of 0, 0.25, or 0.41 mu g ArA per mL of seawater into tanks in the presence or absence of T-Iso algae.
